FORUT Annual Consultation on Alcohol, Drugs and Development (CLOSED MEETING)
23 October 2023

FORUT is a Norwegian NGO. We work to reduce poverty and to create a fair and just world where alcohol and other harmful substances as well as poor mental health do not hinder people’s access to safety and development.

The side event is a closed meeting where representatives from all of FORUT’s partner organisations meet to learn, discuss, create campaigns and activities, and to broaden our partnership in the fight against harms from of alcohol use. The participants represent civil society organisations from India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Zambia, Malawi, Norway, and Sierra Leone in addition to regional alcohol and NCD policy alliances from West Africa, Southern Africa, Asia and Pacific, and Latin America.

The meeting is held in the days before and after the Global Alcohol Policy Conference in order to use the opportunity and the momentum created by GAPC. The topics discussed at the meeting will therefore relate to the topics of GAPC, especially new evidence and policy initiatives. Equally important however is to share and learn from each other given that the participants come from very different countries and contexts but all work on the same challenges posed by alcohol use, the transnational alcohol industry, and the lack of public health framing of alcohol use.

International Confederation of ATOD Research Associations (ICARA) - Advocacy Workshop & Annual General Meeting 2023
23 October 2023

»Working together - collaboration across researchers, policymakers and practitioners towards a better alcohol policy«

ICARA is organizing a half-day workshop on 23rd October 2023, as a side event to the Global Alcohol Policy Conference 2023. The workshop is open to members of ICARA and all interested researchers, policymakers and practitioners in the field of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, to discuss the importance of increased advocacy knowledge and skills and the role of public health professionals in setting evidence-based health promotion and prevention policy and practice.

Advocacy skills are essential for the public health researchers and practitioners to potentially influence policy and decision-making processes for better health promotion and prevention policy and practice. These skills are important especially in those public health areas where so-called “unhealthy” industries (such as alcohol, tobacco, cannabis or junk food industry) are influential and/or want to be important stakeholders in the field.

The aim of the workshop is to provide knowledge and develop/strengthen advocacy skills in the field of health promotion and prevention policy and practice, with a view to increase the competencies of experts in decision-making processes and developing policy and effective evidence-based interventions. Researchers and practitioners need to become more relevant to policymakers, and the event focuses on that aim.

The workshop will be followed by ICARA’s 2023 Annual General Meeting. Both events are open to all ICARA members and other interested participants in the field of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

Number of attendees is limited.

25 October 2023 (12:00 – 14:00)

For the past three years, the Hlanganisa Community Fund for Social and Gender Justice, in collaboration with the Southern Africa Alcohol Policy Alliance, has dedicated its efforts to empower grassroots women. Their focus has been on amplifying women's voices and addressing the connection between alcohol and intimate partner violence. During this event, we will delve into strategies to engage participants more meaningfully in policy processes, both locally and nationally. Participants will explore ways to overcome existing structural barriers that hinder women's full participation in policy dialogues. Grassroots activists and organizations will exchange insights on strategies to ensure women's inclusion in these critical discussions.

Event Information

The Global Alcohol Policy Conference (GAPC) Organizers welcomes Side event's at the 2023 conference.

Through the Side Events, GAPC tries to ensure that partners have dedicated times to host meetings and invite delegates to attend these meetings. Such events allow partners to devote more time to a specific topic, project or initiative than is available during the main Conference Programme.

Side events are completely independent of the Conference programme. They are organised and funded by partners hosting the meetings.

Side events could either be a breakfast, lunch, half day or full day events before and after the conference.

If you or your organization would like to host a side event, please complete the application form and send to Mandy Salomo. Mandy.salomo@mrc.ac.za.
